In the winter of 1997 I became a member of the James Madison chapter, Tennessee Society (where a relative researched my family's history), Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). I am currently a member of  the General Israel Putnam Branch #4, The Connecticut Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, U.S.A.

Society of the Cincinnati (Founded 1783)

The Cincinnati requires direct male descent from a contental line
officer who served for 3 years or more under the direct command of General Washington.

Sons of the Revolution (SR) (Founded 1876)

The SR requires descent from a soldier who saw active duty.

Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) (Founded 1889)

The SAR also allows descent from anyone who aided the cause.

This is my direct proven connection to the Revolutionary War, My great, great, great, great, grandfather:

Samuel Meals -

Born. March 1, 1759 in York, Pennsylvania. Died December 1, 1802 in Virginia.
Married Winnie ______ (b. 1762, d. March 12, 1828) in 1780 in York County, Pennsylvania.

Samuel served in the Revolutionary War as a Seaman in the Virginia Navy 1777-1781. Four months of this was served as a gunner. His name appeared on a list of Virginia Seamen who received part of his pay on December 5, 1781. He was discharged February 5, 1781. The balance of his pay was land grant issued to him on December 5, 1783.
