The 17th Connecticut Fifes & Drums were reorganized in August of 1975, some 200 years after the original 17th regiment of Connecticut militia was created. This group of Northwest Connecticut farmers saw action at the capture of Fort Ticonderoga, the battle of Boston, the burning of Danbury, the battle of Saratoga and the battle for New York City. The 17th Connecticut, in addition to being a military field unit, also had a cavalry detachment assigned to them. All members were distinguished from other Connecticut units by the use of a feather placed in their tri-corned hats. “Their gaunt appearance, rusty equipment, and prancing horses excited the ridicule of Washington's army, until their good service in the battle and retreat from Brooklyn Heights made them better appreciated.”
