THE LEDYARD MONUMENT

Erected by the state of Connecticut to commemorate the burning
of New London, the storming of Groton Fort, the massacre
of the Garrison,  and the slaughter of Ledyard

ERECTED IN 1854

By the State of Connecticut in remeberance of the  
painful events that took place in the neighbourhood
during the war of the Revolution
It commemorates the Burning of New London          
the Storming of Groton Fort the massacure of       
the Garrison and the slaughter of Ledyard the      
brave Commander of these posts who was slain       
         by the Conquerors with his own Sword.

defence, was with a part of the
brave Garrison, inhumanly Mass 
acred; by british troops in    
Fort Griswold, Sep 6 1781

By a judicious & Faithful   
discharge of the various duties   
of his Station, He rendered most  
essential Service to his Country; 
and stood confessed, the un-      
shaken Patriot; and intrepid Hero.
He lived, the Pattern of      
Mananimity; Courtesy, and Humanity.   
He fell the Victim of un-     
generous Rage and Cruelty
