Here is a map (size: 88 KB) of known defenders homes in Ledyard (back then North Groton). The map came from September 6, 1781: North Groton's Story.

Note: The rank of the men is of the time of the battle. Men without a rank in front of their name are privates.

  • Belton Allyn House
  • Lieut. Ebenezer Avery House (located in Groton, CT)
    House was located on present Thames Street. It is now located at Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park. Open to the public. Not located on the mentioned map
  • Andrew Baker House
    Andrew lived on his father's (Samuel Baker) property.
  • Benjamin Bill Jr House
    Benjamin was in the 8th Connecticut Militia Regiment. He was wounded but managed to escape at age 18. He later had a wife and 2 children. He was lost at sea (no burial marker).
  • Joshua Bill House
  • Charles Eldredge Jr. House
  • Daniel Eldredge House
  • Benadam Gallup House
    Robert Gallup's home. Robert was in the Militia State Troops (Capt. William Latham's Matross Company, 8th Connecticut Militia Regiment, stationed at Fort Griswold). Robert was wounded in the battle at Age 21, He later had wife & 4 children. Robert Gallup was buried in Plymouth, N.Y.

    Andrew Gallup was here when the alarm was sounded.
  • Sgt. Rufus Hulburt House
  • Amos Lester House
    (#43 Vinegar Hill)
  • Jonas Lester House
    Jonas was a volunteer at the Battle of Fort Griswold who was killed. No further information
  • Lieut. Joseph Lewis' House
  • Thomas Malleson (Mallison) House
    Thomas was a volunteer at the battle (age 20) who managed to escape. He has been a Sgt. in the Continental Line, 1777-1779.

Militia, (Killed British second in command Major Montgomery). Killed, Age ?

Samuel Hill -
Volunteer (was in Lexington Alarm 1775), Wounded, Age ?, wife & 5 children. No known grave marker

Lambo Latham (colored) - Slave Servant to Capt. William Latham's father. Volunteer, Killed, Age ?

William (Billy) Latham Jr. - Escaped, Age 12 (Died at sea, 1792)

Luke Perkins - Volunteer, Killed, Age ?, wife, No known grave marker.

Nathan Sholes - Militia (Capt. William Latham's Matross Company, 8th Connecticut Militia Regiment, stationed at Fort Griswold, was a Corp. in the Continental Line, 1778-1780), Killed, Age ?, wife & 2 children.

Sgt. Major John K. Stedman Jr. - Volunteer (had been a Sgt., New York Campaign 1776), Killed, Age ?, wife & 7 children

Tom Wansuc (Pequot Indian) - Volunteer, Wounded & Paroled, Age ?
