Thank you for your Interest
in the 1st Maryland/Southern Campaign. We are a Revolutionary War reenactment unit
This web site has been prepared for potential members and other interested people.
Most of your questions will be answered by the information contained here on our website.
However, feel free to contact any of the people listed in our Point of Contact section, with any other
questions. We hope you will join us to help preserve our rich American Heritage. We
look forward to you soon taking the field with us.
This unit, organized in March 1997,
was started because there was a considerable interest and a need for a good, local, family
oriented, politic-free regiment that stresses quality events over quantity. There are not
any Continental Line units headquartered in Western North Carolina, all others being
primarily in Piedmont or Eastern North Carolina. Spouses and children are welcome to take
part in all our events and encouraged to become voting members if they wish. Leave your
politics at home (enough said). |
We plan to attend several
good reenactments per year and have day trips to battlefields; museums, historic events
and unit get-togethers make up the rest of our schedule. The bottom line is to make
reenacting fun and not a chore.
While the 1st is open to
anyone meeting the membership requirements, our recruiting
will be concentrated in the Carolinas & Georgia. It should be stressed that you DO NOT have to live
in his area to be a member. Most current members are veteran reenactors bringing a
wealth of knowledge and experience. We have a member who has ancestors in the Maryland
Line but this is not a requirement for membership. This is another reason why we decided
to reactivate as the 1st Maryland/Southern Campaign.
FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT REENACTING
WHY
REENACT?
Because you are obviously interested in history and what better way to learn about
our history, than to participate rather than just read about it. You can go to historical
sites and see them from a different perspective. We are sometimes allowed to do things at
historic battlefields that tourists never have the opportunity to do--like camping on the
actual battlefield or staying in the barracks of some old fort. Besides, it's alot of fun.
WHAT
ABOUT YOUR UNIFORMS/EQUIPMENT? AND WHERE TO GET THEM?
13 items will get you started in the 1st Maryland/Southern Campaign (See uniform
guide). If your coming from another unit most of your uniform/equipment will probably be
correct for the 1st Maryland/Southern
Campaign. We do not require
anyone to replace items unless they are totally incorrect for the 1st Maryland/Southern
Campaign. You can buy these items or patterns from reenactors called "Sutlers" who recreate the
merchants that followed the armies and sold to the soldiers. Usually a good source of
general knowledge, sutlers sell at reenactments and by mail order and some do it via the
Internet.
HOW
MUCH WILL ALL THIS COST?
The cost of your uniform & equipment will be around $600 plus your musket which
will run from $600-$700. If you know of someone who can sew, it is possible to get
outfitted much cheaper. Sometimes it is possible to find muskets at local guns shows or
blanket traders at reeenactments at more resonable prices But don't let that scare you
off, we allow new members to aquire their uniforms & equipment over a period of time.
It is alot like golf. Once you have the golf clubs, the cost is quite reasonable.
WHAT
OTHER EXPENSES ARE THERE?
Membership dues are $15/year due September 1st. Dues for new members are
prorated if you join after the due date (subtract $1.25 for each month after Sept). This
pays for unit equipment items (dining flyies, cooking utensils, ect) that all members can
use).
WHAT
TYPE OF ACTIVITIES DOES THE UNIT PARTICIPATE IN?
Our main emphasis is battle reenactment. However, we will also participate in
living history programs, parades, local festivals, memorial services, school lectures and
trips to battlefields, museums and historic events.
HOW
MANY EVENTS OR MEETINGS MUST I ATTEND TO BE A MEMBER?
There is no minimum participation requirement. However, most intrusion on drill,
use of the musket, helpful hints, unit business, etc. will be given at events and
meetings. So you should attend some, just to learn the basics.
WHERE
DO YOU GO TO REENACT BATTLES?
Reenactments are held just about every weekend. Our schedule is planned with travel
time in mind There are quite a few good events are within a reasonable driving
distance from us including: Greensboro, NC; Camden, SC; Elizabethton & Vonore, TENN.
However, for an important event or one that holds significance to the 1st
Maryland/Southern Campaign, we may plan one event per year that is farthest away.
WHY
DO YOU PORTRAY THE 1ST MARYLAND?
The 1st was prominent in most of the battles of the Southern Campaign of the
Revolutionary War (all NC Continental units being captured at Charleston, SC in 1780), was
a typical Continental Line regiment and no one in the carolinas portrays it.
WHAT
AREAS ARE YOUR MEMBERS FROM?
We have members in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia
WHAT
MUST I DO TO JOIN?
Read the information on this website, but do not make a hasty decision. It will
require to make an initial Monetary outlay of some expense. Think it over. If you decide
to join, print and fill out the application & medical form and send it with your check
(payable to: Ron Norman/1st Maryland) to: Ron Norman (CO) (see below).
